This result is achieved after searching through only 500K possible solutions, which is about 1.23 × 10 −19 percent only of the total search space. The algorithm finds a placement that is better than both QWERTY and Dvorak Simplified by 32.68% and 15.79% respectively on the training set, and 32.71% and 15.84% respectively on the testing set. As a case study, we use the algorithm to find a better placement for the keyboard characters than QWERTY and Dvorak Simplified characters placements. The proposed algorithm optimizes the placement of the objects by searching through a small fraction of the search space.

The authors of this study propose a new concept of a single line keyboard named One Row Keyboard (ORK) which can be applied for both computer and virtual keyboards. Many papers have been devoted to the study of computer keyboards and virtual keyboards. The most common device used to communicate with a computer is the keyboard. The development of technology brings the computerization of everyday life. The experimental results demonstrate that it can greatly overcome the disadvantages of traditional QWERTY keyboard, and better meet the needs of this ring-type virtual keyboard. As for moving distance, our keyboard layouts can even save half of the distance compared with physical keyboards. Additionally, the testing of muscle oppression results indicates that our keyboard shows a significant difference (p<0.05) from traditional QWERTY keyboard in this regard. The new layout for virtual keyboard has seen an improvement of 5.72% in recognition accuracy, which is of vital significance for ring-type virtual keyboards. The results show that it is much more accurate, comfortable, and faster than traditional QWERTY keyboard. In particularly, the keyboard layout was mainly improved through three aspects: arc and split design, key position adjustment, and letter arrangement. With this method, it also has significant advantages in the aspect of muscle oppression and typing distance. In this study, we claimed that layout optimization can potentially improve recognition accuracy for virtual keyboard, and then we presented an example to achieve it through layout redesign.
